The trouble with creating conceptual stock illustrations of anything related to the world of tech is that those images don’t have much of a useful lifespan. My 3d rendering collection consists largely of tech-related concepts, so it’s a major bummer that much of my early work (starting in 2006) has become horribly outdated and darn near useless for anything but laughs.

Because of that, I spend a lot of time recreating and modernizing some of my oldest and most outdated images. A perfect example of that is this series of smart phone illustrations, created to directly replace my old collection of conceptual flip-phone renderings. That flip-phone collection had a good run, but they are understandably not so relevant today and there is nothing more I can do with that set. They are gone for good, forever regulated to my personal archives never to be seen again. Maybe someday I can create a “Norebbo Classics” section of the blog where I can post old images and we can all sit around and laugh at technology long forgotten. 🙂

Anyway this collection of smart phone illustrations marks the beginning of what I hope will become a much larger set. There are a variety of concepts here featuring the same basic device, some with a blank display, and some with a generic home screen that I created. I realize that most people would want to map their own custom screens onto these illustrations, but I just wanted to include a few “complete” images just in case anyone needed them.

Hopefully you’ll find some of these smart phone renderings useful. You can always leave a comment if there’s something in particular you’d like to see, and I’ll do my best to try and get it into my rendering schedule. I also want to create some different devices (tablets, for example) just for the sake of variety. But I’m probably going to be forced into doing it anyway once the next big thing is on the market and I’m forced to retire this set…

A few years ago I had a discussion with a design colleague about “think tanks”. The definition for that which I have always had in my mind was something like a large room or container where people go to think. In other words, a large private room to brainstorm and think of ideas. However, my colleague jokingly made a comment about needing to purchase a “think tank” so he could come up with better ideas, and it was the first time I had ever heard the term used in that context. It sparked quite a debate, and it ended with him thinking I was nuts for thinking about it as a large room of some kind. Was I right, or was he? I don’t think there is a definitive answer for that.

I have never forgot about that discussion, and I have always wanted to make a series of stock illustrations featuring think tanks – just as my colleague had described. Here is the first set of images from that collection:

  • A large blue think tank lying on its side over a dark gray reflective surface
  • A big high pressure think tank standing behind a pair of dark sunglasses
  • A blue think tank wearing a large red and white lifesaver
  • A large blue high-pressure think tank with a thick metallic hose connected to the nozzle
  • A large blue think tank wearing two large gears over a reflective steel surface
  • A big blue high pressure think tank lying on it’s side over a white reflective surface with a thick metallic hose attached to the nozzle

Need these think tank images in resolutions up to 5000px wide? They are available in my online store.

I have recently rediscovered my interest in using automotive brakes as a metaphor for creative “stop” or “quit” concepts. They are very iconic in form for a variety of applications, so I’m kind of surprised that I didn’t develop a set like this a long time ago. Since the Norebbo 3d image collection is all about whimsical concepts and metaphors, I decided it was time to do something about that. I have a handful more of these that I’ve yet to render in full size so I’ll be sure to get them uploaded as I can fit them into my rendering schedule.

Here’s a more detailed description of the entire set:

  • A large automotive brake rotor lying face up with a bright green radar screen in the center
  • The same brake and radar illustration as noted above, but this time it’s angled upwards for a different arrangement
  • A vented brake rotor sitting on a stack of credit cards
  • A large brake rotor with a red caliper wearing an audio headset
  • A large automotive brake rotor and caliper in a puddle of silver liquid
  • An overturned trash can with a vented brake rotor spilling out of it
